Call Out: Chisato Minamimura Residency Collaboration
The proposed creative outcome of this residency is to create a Deafscape of Ireland.
A Deafscape is an attempt to translate soundscapes into visual form. It offers Deaf people a new way to access sound and invites hearing people to discover a world they have not previously seen.
Two opportunities are available:
- One sound artist based in Ireland
- One video artist based in Ireland
The residency will take place in Project Arts Centre and local area and will be in collaboration with an interpreter who will be supporting communication of the work for the duration of the residency.
About the residency
Chisato Minamimura will explore the unique soundscape of a coastal town in Ireland accessible via public transport from Dublin City Centre and create a Deafscape of Ireland video. For reference, please watch Deafscape of Snape Maltings, which Chisato created in 2022.
About Chisato
Chisato Minamimura is a Deaf performance artist, visual artist and British Sign Language art guide. Born in Japan and now based in London, Minamimura has created, performed and taught internationally and is currently a Work Place artist at The Place. Minamimura trained at Trinity Laban in London and holds a BA in Japanese Painting and an MA from Yokohama National University. Minamimura approaches choreography and performance-making from her unique perspective as a Deaf artist, experimenting with and exploring the visualisation of sound and music. By using dance and technology, Minamimura aims to share her experiences of sensory perception and human encounters.
She is currently touring Scored in Silence, and her new work Mark of a Woman.
Opportunities Available
Chisato is interested in working with artists at any stage of their careers who work across the following disciplines:
- Sound Design
- It is integral that the artist can describe sound creatively and not rely solely on technical musical terminology. Chisato is interested in the translation of sound into visual, tactile or other sensory descriptions.
- Videography
- It is integral that the artist can work closely with Chisato as a Deaf artist and can collaborate with her during both the filming and editing process.
It is important that the selected artists understand that the residency and creative outcome of the project will be Deaf-led and experience with working with Deaf artists would be beneficial.
