Yes and Yes

Dublin Dance Festival: Liz Roche Company presents

20-21 May 2023

There are four dancers all wearing full-body floral morph suits. Two dancers are positioned on the floor, while the other two dancers are being dragged by the two standing dancers. We see that are on the floor are being positioned into an L shape by the dancers that are standing.
Yes and Yes is a contemporary response to one of the most important works of modern literature, James Joyce’s Ulysses.

Marking 100 years since its first publication, Yes and Yes is a contemporary response to one of the most important works of modern literature, James Joyce’s Ulysses. Yes and Yes comes to Dublin Dance Festival following sold out performances in Washington D.C, Philadelphia and Ireland.

This evocative dance work by leading Irish choreographer, Liz Roche, takes its title from the final episode of the book and its famous last words, “…yes, I said yes I will Yes”, exclaimed by Molly Bloom. Featuring four exceptional dancers, the piece moves through the episodes of Joyce’s masterpiece, exploring the sensuality, absurdity, release, and resignation of the book through movement, film, sound and design.

The piece maps the movement of the narrative through the streets of Dublin in 1904 and reimagines those same spaces and encounters today, with contemporary bodies revealing new and surprising connections.

“Liz Roche Company bask[s] in the complexity of Joyce’s multi-layered novel…. a sense of irreverence is never far from the surface … the novel, a conceptual scaffold for the impressive choreography.” The Irish Times

“Like Joyce did with words, Roche plays with the infinite choreographic possibilities of movement … Yes and Yes is an artistic delight, offering a multitude of perspectives for you to enjoy and discuss time and again” The Arts Review

A colour photo of four dancers on a stage wearing tracksuit bottoms and plain t-shirts of different styles. The stage is lit in two overlapping points, with the rest of the floor and wall in darkness. On the back wall, there is a landscape image being projected showing a crane and a cloudy sky in black and white. In the two points of light on stage, two dancers stand separately. They face the camera, with their left feet planted on the stage and their right heels on the stage in a slight step out, toes pointing up. They have their arms hang down from their shoulders but are bent out and upwards at the elbows, with their hands splayed out and facing the camera. Their faces are angled slightly upwards towards the ceiling. In the dark behind them, two dancers walk separately across the stage in the same direction.
