William McKeown is an artist based in Dublin. For the last ten years McKeown has worked in the genre of monochrome paintings, although his work fits oddly into this category. Unusually for work of this kind, his paintings attempt to express notions of freedom, inclusion and equality which make them simultaneously complex and naïve.
At Project the paintings were hung in an artificial room constructed inside the buildings' existing architecture. The dimensions of the room are taken from a convent in County Waterford where McKeown spent a year painting and made significant developments in his work. Beyond its autobiographical nature, the room structures the viewer's perception in a particular way, becoming the threshold onto an illusionary space.
Biography
McKeown studied at Central/St Martin's School of Art & Design, London, Glasgow School of Art and the University of Ulster at Belfast and has for a number of years lived and worked in Dublin. He has participated in a number of group exhibitions including 'Summer Group Show', Kerlin Gallery, Dublin (2007, 2006 and 2005), 'A Dream of Discipline', Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin (2006), the exhibition of contemporary Irish drawings, 'A Measured Quietude' which toured the Berkeley Art Museum, California and The Drawing Centre, New York (1999/2000); and 'The Sea & The Sky' at the Royal Hibernian Academy (2000), Dublin and Beaver College Art Gallery, Glenside, Pennsylvania (2000). McKeown was short-listed for the prestigious Irish Museum of Modern Art Glen Dimplex Award in 1997.
