WHERE SUNDEW* GROWS - Liadain Herriott

Certain soil is lacking in nutrients.
There is a particular plant that suffers from mineral
Deficiency due to this.  Glistening drops of mucilage
At the tip of each tentacle resemble drops of morning dew.
Of a carnivorous nature, it preys upon the tiny.
The plant kingdom versus the insect kingdom -
A unique environment where strange flora flourish,
A place where things aren’t always what they seem.
In a world where expressions of emotion are reduced
To acronyms, this piece does the opposite.
It puts them under the microscope.
*Derived from ros solis, meaning “dew of the sun”.  An alluring plant that exists in a place where bodies never perish, the bog.
A dance solo inspired by the bog, this other worldly new work, choreographed and performed by Liadain Herriott, promises a transformative experience as it takes you to another place. Originally trained as a classical ballet dancer in Dublin, Monte Carlo and Madrid. Liadain has worked for opera companies and choreographers internationally as well as for filmmaker Pedro Almodovar. Choreographing since 2009, her work has been performed at festivals in India, Latvia, Belgium and Spain.
Physical death is just a momentary event in our eternal consciousness. Inspired by the bog, this evoking dance solo explores one of the most fundamental of human emotions - fear. Expect to be lured into a universe where things aren't always what they seem, a place that mystifies the beholder. Somewhat like a dark and twisted version of Alice in Wonderland, or "something out of a Lars Von Trier film", the interpretation is yours to make.

“We step out of our solar system, into the universe, seeking only peace and friendship...” So says the message from the human race on the Voyager spacecraft. But is there, y'know, anyone out there? Alex really wanted to know so he went to speak to an astrophysicist to find out. This is what he learned: Stellar Wobble. Light Clocks. The Mirror Test. The Distance Ladder. And murderous dolphins.
Alexander Kelly is co-artistic director of Sheffield based, internationally acclaimed theatre company, Third Angel, with whom he devises, directs, writes, designs and performs. The company makes a range of work connecting the territories of theatre, live art, installation, film, video, photography and digital & online media, which tours throughout Britain, mainland Europe and beyond.
