Vuci Album Launch

Francesco Turrisi

22 October 2026

Grammy Award-winning pianist Francesco Turrisi launches his album “Vuci” with a multimedia show exploring his Sicilian roots and migration through music, archival recordings, and poetry.

The album explores Turrisi’s Sicilian roots through a series of compositions connected to the time he spent on the island during his childhood, and also reflects on the idea of migration: that of his own family leaving Sicily, and the more recent movement of people arriving on its shores. Some of these compositions feature archival recordings of Sicilian voices from the 1940s and 1950s, performing work songs and songs of everyday life. “Vuci” is a storytelling performance shaped through Francesco’s own voice and music, as well as through pre-recorded poetry spoken in Sicilian by Ester Pantano and Nino Provenzano, and in English by celebrated actor John Turturro.

The performance consists of this original music written by Francesco for solo piano. Still and moving images are also central to the work: archival photographs documenting the traditions of tuna fishing (tonnara), alongside original material created for the show by video artist Laura Sheeran. These immersive video works draw audiences into the world of the album, creating a journey through questions of identity, belonging, and what Sicily means to those who leave, those who seek to reach its shores, and those who call it home.

After the performance Francesco Turrisi will be joined by Kate Ellis to discuss the new album, followed by a Q&A.

Group Group More about Francesco Turrisi
Francesco Turrisi is a Grammy Award–winning multi-instrumentalist acclaimed as a “musical alchemist” and “musical polyglot.” Equally at home in jazz, early music, and traditions from the Mediterranean, he brings a uniquely exploratory voice to every collaboration and performance. Turrisi has worked with an exceptional range of artists, moving fluidly between genres and centuries. He has performed with jazz luminaries Dave Liebman, Bill Frisell, and Christian McBride; collaborated with Irish sean-nós singer Róisín El Safty and Italian tarantella specialist Lucilla Galeazzi; toured with Bobby McFerrin; played baroque opera with L’Arpeggiata; joined The Silk Road Ensemble; interpreted Steve Reich with Bang on a Can All-Stars; and accompanied flamenco master Pepe El Habichuela and Greek vocalist Savina Yannatou. He has released five critically acclaimed albums as a leader and four as co-leader. His most recent solo piano recording, Northern Migrations, was praised by The Irish Times as “delicate, wistful and wholly engrossing.” Since 2018, Turrisi has collaborated closely with American singer and multi-instrumentalist Rhiannon Giddens. Their duo project explores connections between musical lineages from the Mediterranean and the traditions of the African diaspora in the Americas. Their 2019 album there is no Other received widespread critical acclaim and produced the Grammy-nominated single “I’m on My Way.” Their follow-up album, They’re Calling Me Home (2021), earned two Grammy nominations and won the 2022 Grammy Award for Best Folk Album. Turrisi has recorded or performed with a wide array of artists including Bobby McFerrin, Ben Harper, Yo-Yo Ma, Taj Mahal, Bill Frisell, Christian McBride, Gavin Bryars, Lisa Hannigan, The King’s Singers, Philippe Jaroussky, Rolando Villazón, and many others.
