The Sudden

Dublin Dance Festival: Pan Pan presents

24-25 May 2023

On a grey background, performer Katherine O'Malley is pictured holding performer Salma Ataya horizontally whilst biting her side. There is blood coming from Katherine's mouth.
Exploring everything in reverse, The Sudden starts with a closing night party. By all accounts, it hasn't gone well.

Exploring everything in reverse, The Sudden starts with a closing night party. By all accounts, it hasn't gone well. The cast of dancers use the audience to put together the final scene - the missing piece of the puzzle.

The Sudden is the eureka moment - the answer, the end, the reveal. It's an experiment in live direction, authorship, and choreography, where the audience tells stories or asks questions, which the performers painstakingly depict on stage in innovative ways.

It's all about the search. It invites you to live the questions now. Perhaps then, someday far in the future, you will gradually, without even noticing it, live your way into the answer.

This show includes audience participation and strong language.

Pan Pan is supported by Arts Council of Ireland & Dublin City Council. Dublin Dance Festival is proudly supported by the Arts Council and Dublin City Council. Project Arts Centre is proudly supported by The Arts Council and Dublin City Council.

Pan Pan was founded in 1993 by Co-Artistic Directors Aedín Cosgrove and Gavin Quinn. The company has toured its work to the most prestigious festivals and venues worldwide. Pan Pan’s mission is to make work that inspires, questions, and challenges and to support and nurture artists. We approach theatre as an open and truthful form of expression. The work that Pan Pan creates reflects core company values of collaboration, boldness, truth, originality, and impact. We seek to reflect the diversity of contemporary Ireland in our work, collaborating with artists and casts from many different publics. Using various artistic disciplines in unique combinations, we challenge the conventions of theatre. From initial concept to full production, we encourage collaboration, experimentation, and originality.
