The Alphabet of Birds by Sara Baume

HOLY SHOW presents

18 February 2023

Writer and artist Sara Baume covers wide ground in this spellbinding audio-visual essay.

Sunday Mass and sea swimming; bird alphabets and stone collecting; Goya and Monet; the Stations of the Cross and the Sacred Heart of Jesus; bedrooms and bedsits; insomnia and parental love. Writer and artist Sara Baume covers wide ground in this spellbinding audio-visual essay. Ultimately, it’s a show about our obsessions and passions – the multitude of rituals that fill our daily lives with meaning.

The Alphabet of Birds is the second 'live audio-visual essay' for stage written by Sara Baume. Live readings from Baume are interspersed with four short documentaries from Director Jamie Goldrick that feature artists Gary Coyle, Laura Fitzgerald, Sara Baume, and Natalia Beylis. The essay and films are live-scored by musician Irene Buckley.

Sara Baume was born in Lancashire and grew up and lives in County Cork. She is the author of three novels, Spill, Simmer, Falter, Wither; A Line Made By Walking; and Seven Steeples. She has also written a book of non-fiction, handiwork, which charts the daily process of making and writing. Irene Buckley is an Award-winning composer who is active across many music disciplines including choral, opera, orchestral, dance, theatre, film, and electronics. In recent years she has focused on composing live scores for silent movies. Natalia Beylis’ work revolves between sonic story-telling and multi-instrumental compositions. She layers seemingly incongruous sounds on top of each other to spawn strange juxtapositions and garbled parallels. Born in Kiev and raised in Baltimore (the one in America), she is now burrowed into Leitrim. Beylis runs Sofia Records and is a contributor to ‘ddr’ where she explores the medium of radio as art. Gary Coyle is a Graduate of NCAD Dublin and The RCA London. He was elected a member of the RHA in 2007 and Aosdana in 2009. His work embraces various media, including drawing, photography, and spoken word/performance. He has exhibited widely in Ireland and internationally. Laura Fitzgerald is a visual artist from Inch, Co Kerry. She’s a Graduate of NCAD and the Royal College of Art, London. Her work has been exhibited at IMMA, the RHA, EVA International, and the National Gallery among others. She’s received numerous awards from the Arts Council and elsewhere and recently completed a residency at the Fire Station Artists’ Studios in Dublin. Jamie Goldrick is a filmmaker based in Dublin, Ireland. His films have screened at festivals nationally and internationally and have picked up a couple of awards along the way. He is currently developing a feature-length documentary on Electronic Networks with EsoDoc 2020. Brendan Mac Evilly is the editor of Holy Show. His fiction has been published in the Stinging Fly and Honest Ulsterman, and non-fiction in The Irish Times, Sunday Times, The Guardian and elsewhere. He has published a non-fiction book, At Swim: A Book About the Sea (Collins Press, 2015).
