TA RA TERESA

When a Scouser of Irish descent moves with his daughter to live in Blaenau Ffestiniog, he believes that he has discovered his Shangri La.

Written by Aled Jones Williams
With Owen Arwyn, Rhian Cadwaladr, Tami Gwyn and Michael Atkinson
When a Scouser of Irish descent moves with his daughter to live in Blaenau Ffestiniog, he believes that he has discovered his Shangri La. While his daughter learns Welsh and is assimilated into the community, he however fails to learn the language, despite his best efforts. This leads to him becoming distanced both from his daughter and his adopted homeland. The resulting alienation has explosive consequences. Ta Ra Teresa has been created for audiences throughout the whole of Wales. The purpose of the production is to bridge both linguistically and culturally between the Welsh speaking and the non-Welsh speaking people in Wales and to offer a rare taste of Welsh language culture to a broader audience.
Llwyfan Gogledd Cymru / North Wa
les Stage is a theatre company committed to bridging the linguistic and social divides which exist within contemporary Wales. Aled Jones Williams is one of Wales’ foremost poets and dramatists.
Ta Ra Teresa won the best Welsh language play of 2002. It is a bilingual/multi media production which deals with the contentious issue of in-migration. As it is a play about language, it is staged within language and simultaneous translation is used throughout the play making it accessible to Welsh and non-Welsh speaking audiences alike. Many people are of the opinion that Ta Ra Teresa is one of the most important Welsh language plays for years which is about the in-migration of non Welsh speaking people to rural Wales. Though the play won the award for Best Welsh language Play for 2002, over a quarter of the play is in English and it entirely simultaneously translated and accessible to all.
