Swan Lake with an African twist!
Combining classic and contemporary dance that is strongly influenced by her African heritage, South African dancer and choreographer Dada Masilo creates explosive, passionate work. Her stunning new vision of one of the great classics of Western Dance, Swan Lake, is no exception.
Tchaikovsky's music is spliced with Steve Reich and other contemporary composers. African dance mixes freely with classical ballet choreography.
Re-imagining this iconic ballet through a modern lens, Masilo's company of twelve African dancers turn Swan Lake on its head to tackle issues of gender and homophobia in a country ravaged by AIDS.
