Step Up 19

Step Up Dance Project plays host to some of Ireland’s most promising contemporary dance graduates. Six promising young dancers have been chosen following a competitive open call and audition process. They are a mix of Irish natives who have travelled abroad to complete their training and seek work, and dancers who have trained in Ireland and are now resident here. The dancers will work with high profile choreographers to create new work. Pictured at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at The University of Limerick. Pic: Don Moloney
Step Up Dance Project, now in its ninth year, once again plays host to some of Ireland’s most promising contemporary dance graduates. Step Up 19 brings a new outlook, curated by Marguerite Donlon (Ireland / Germany), International choreographer and Director of Donlon Dance Collective, based in Berlin.

Step Up Dance Project, now in its ninth year, once again plays host to some of the most promising recent dance graduates. Step Up 19 brings a new outlook, curated by Marguerite Donlon (Ireland / Germany), International choreographer and Director of Donlon Dance Collective, based in Berlin.
Six promising young dancers have been chosen following a competitive open call and audition process: Ambre Twardowski, Juliana Tarumoto, Aliina Lindroos, Claudia Gesmundo, Rosie Mullin & Ginvera Cecere.
The Step Up 2019 participants have worked with Marguerite Donlon, Emanuele Soavi (Germany / Italy) and Francesco Vecchione (Italy / Spain) over a period of ten weeks to create 3 exciting dance works which tour Limerick, Longford, Cork and Dublin.
Step Up Dancers will be performing 3 dance works:

Lost in Translations by Marguerite Donlon (Ireland, Germany). Lost in Translations is the story of ten days, six dancers, five languages, years of experiences, millions of emotions, thousands of questions, hundreds of opinions, one passion, one life. Marguerite says of the work ‘The stories are true and belonging to the dancers. Using these stories as a base we weaved this piece together. Language played a big role in in many ways in the process, hence the title Lost in Translations.’ Marguerite Donlon is the Step Up 19 Artistic Curator.
The Princess Saves Herself in this One by Francesco Vecchione (Italy, Spain). Inspired by the poetry of Amanda Lovelace, Francesco Vecchione wanted to present and verbalise through movement the opinions of 6 young women on their personal role in our present society. With the dancers coming from different cultural and religious backgrounds, the piece depicts how they feel, sometimes stereotyped and always questioning their position in this so called ever evolving society.
Six Hidden Variations by Emanuele Soavi (Germany, Italy). In this interplay six dancers appear and vanish into the dark: an empty space remote from traditional aesthetics and their beautiful bodies. The puzzling sounds that arise are equally without any clear location or reference. Creaking, clattering and cawing. Appearing to take place in a melting, hidden space over multiple times, the performers appear to dissipate, splintering into infinitesimal fragments right in front of our eyes. The piece unfolds like a baroque scenery set.
Step Up Dance Programme is a partnership between the Arts Council Ireland, Dance Ireland, Dance Limerick and the Irish World Academy at University of Limerick, which aims to bridge the gap between dance education and professional contemporary dance practice in Ireland. August 2019 Tour Dates: Monday 26th at Dance Limerick Wednesday 28th at Backstage Theatre, Longford. Friday 30th at Firkin Crane, Cork. Saturday 31st at Project Arts Centre, Dublin.
Choregrapher Bios Marguerite Donlon is an innovative, contemporary choreographer and performer based in Berlin. Known for her humour and profound creativity, her work thrills an unusually broad audience. With stylistic innovation, Irish wit and the combination of different art forms, she has pushed artistic limits to secure a place in the international dance scene. Francesco Vecchione has danced with Ballet Basel, Nederlands Dans Theater II, Compañía Nacional de Danza, and the Ballett des Saarländischen Staatstheaters (first under the direction of Marguerite Donlon and later, Stijn Celis). His choreography ANNA won the “Castilla y Leon” Prize at the Burgos-New York International Choreography Competition in 2015. Emanuele Soavi started his career at Opera Roma and Teatro La Fenice in Venice. He then worked with Ballet Dortmund the Dutch company Introdans with Jiří Kylián, Hans van Manen, William Forsythe and Mats Ek. Since 2016 he has been working as a freelance choreographer for independent ensembles, companies, theaters and universities, among them Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich, Theater Aachen and Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne. The participants received coaching and training from acclaimed dance artists and choreographers during the project, they are: Prof Dieter Heitkamp (Germany). Dieter Heitkamp will give an in-depth workshop on improvisation techniques as one of the greatest teachers in this field. A dance piece may develop out of this process and will be subsequently performed with the other works. Further information on Prof Dieter Heitkamp HERE. Rainer Behr (Germany). Rainer is a long time dancer with Pina Bausch. Participants will learn repertoire choreography as well as the philosophy and deeper meaning of each movement handed down to Rainer directly from Pina Bausch. Further information on Rainer Behr HERE. Eoin Mac Donncha (Ireland) is the Step Up 19 ballet master and rehearsal director. Eoin trained at The Rambert School of Ballet in London before working at various state theatres in Germany including Stadtheater Giessen and Staatstheter Saarbrucken.
