Join us for an online event with Artist Owen Maseko in conversation with Curator Zoé Samudzi this Wednesday 9 July at 7pm.
Following the cancellation of Owen Maseko’s artist talk at the gallery last month, this event has been rescheduled to take place online. Guest curator Zoé Samudzi and exhibiting artist Owen Maseko will discuss the making of the exhibition Sibathontisele / Let’s drip on them / Braon ar bhraon orthu, which engages the traumatic memory of the Gukurahundi, the four-year genocidal targeting of Ndebele people by Zimbabwean government forces.
Considerable obstacles have been faced in staging this exhibition in Ireland: the original artwork had to be remade as the Zimbabwean Supreme Court placed a ban on it travelling outside of the country, the artist Owen Maseko faced numerous Visa issues, and when finally able to travel, was taken into police custody on arriving in the airport for his flight to Dublin. Project Arts Centre and guest curator Zoé Samudzi unequivocally reject the framing and reporting of this incident and stand in unwavering solidarity with Owen.
This public conversation seeks to shed light on creating art that confronts local political realities and censorship, reflecting Project Arts Centre’s commitment to supporting artistic freedom and truth-telling.
The online event marks the closing of Sibathontisele / Let’s drip on them / Braon ar bhraon orthu, which runs until July 12. Admission is free (as always). Please note this event is free but ticketed.
