NIGHTCLUBBING

Live Collision present

25 April 2019

Rachael Young and her badass band of super-humans embrace Afrofuturism and the cult of Grace Jones in NIGHTCLUBBING; an explosive new performance bringing visceral live music and intergalactic visions to start a revolution.

POST PUNK / POST FEAR / POST PANIC
Rachael Young and her badass band of super-humans embrace Afrofuturism and the cult of Grace Jones in NIGHTCLUBBING; an explosive new performance bringing visceral live music and intergalactic visions to start a revolution.
1981: Grace Jones releases her landmark album ‘Nightclubbing’; her body is brown and soft.
2015: Three women are refused entry into a London nightclub; their bodies are brown and soft.
Grace Jones; a dark skinned, androgynous, Jamaican woman, transcending societal norms to become an international superstar. Then later, three young black women, discriminated against and excluded, their bodies branded; ‘undesirable’.
WE are those women, we zoom through galaxies and solar systems, traveling through time, preparing for our moment to land…IT’S NOW!
People of colour to the front, women to the front, LGBTQIA++ to the front!

“Young doesn’t simply transform herself. She seems to turn the whole world inside out; inverts it, subverts it….Like Jones, Young makes herself alien, but she ends by changing the planet: a new world and a background that better suits blackness.” – [star-4] What’s on Stage

“Young’s text is gorgeous, her thinking exact, so that Nightclubbing becomes both dreamy and fervent.” – Matt Trueman [stars-4] The Stage

“Fiercely political tribute to Grace Jones and clubbing in an age of Afrofuturism….Nightclubbing is a show of grit and glitter: an uncompromising original tornado.”- Francesca Peschier, Exeunt

“Young is incredible. She is an awe-inspiring presence. The room rumbles because of her. The noise grows, and the walls shake because of her….She is an alchemist, a self-anointed light-catcher.” – Freddie Machin

“Even trying to explain the show in simple words seems impossible and gives it an orthodoxy that is beneath it, for this is a pulsating, dynamic, innovative presentation that blends Afrofuturism and heavy beats with poetry and prose. And, let me tell you, the results are phenomenal.”- Victoria Sadler
