MIRRORS OF EARTH

The Irish premiere of Kaija Saariaho’s seminal chamber-ensemble Maa. Originally conceived as a ballet, in this re-imagining as Mirrors of Earth the complete work (duration 1h15m) is performed with a newly commissioned video by Cork-based artist Ailbhe Ní Bhriain. The seven movements, varying in force from surround-sound ‘tape’ to an ensemble of seven musicians, display Saariaho’s characteristically luxuriant textures and the themes with which she infuses her work – distance, longing, journey and sense of place. Ní Bhriain’s seven accompanying videos reference the sense of dislocation within a landscape using constructed imagery to create scenes in which the dimensions of time and place are out–of–joint.

Dublin Sound Lab is a contemporary music ensemble specialising in electronic and computer-mediated concert performance. Founded in 2008 by organist Michael Quinn and the composer Fergal Dowling, the group brings contemporary international repertoire to Irish audiences and perform new Irish music on an international stage in performances of the highest artistic and technical standards. As well as presenting established works, DSL initiate new repertoire and use computer-based techniques to explore novel relationships between musical material, compositional process and performance practice to create new and genuinely engaging concert experiences.
