Making Neighbourhoods: National Seminar

Workhouse Union, in partnership with SOA and Cloughjordan Co-Housing present

8 June 2023

Making Neighbourhoods is an opportunity to share, network and learn from each other.

Workhouse Union, in partnership with Self Organised Architecture (SOA) and Cloughjordan Co-Housing invites you to take part in Making Neighbourhoods, a National Seminar exploring creative approaches to community-led neighbourhood making.

The seminar marks the national launch of Self Organised Architecture’s Reimagining Elderhood project through film, presentation and exhibition. The Reimagining Elderhood project features architect-led, community co-design approaches to ageing and housing in three neighbourhoods across the island of Ireland: Ballyhackamore, Belfast; Balbriggan, Dublin and Coal Quay, Cork.

Making Neighbourhoods is an opportunity to share, network and learn from each other. The day will include panel conversations with Katharine Wheeler (The Stove Network), Ian Dempsey (Prescience), Caroline Crowley (Independent Researcher), Aisling Rusk and Aisling Madden (Studio Idir), Laura Carroll and Ciarán Molumby (Islander Architects) and Ailbhe Cunningham (Pebble Architecture + Design).

An active afternoon of workshops and activities will be facilitated by Jessica Bonefant (Greywood Arts), Ellie Kisyombe (Our Table), Hugh Brennan (Ó Cualann), Patrick Mulvihill (Amicitia), Rachel Cassen (LEAP Ireland), Thom Stewart (An Áit Eile), Bernadine Carroll (Irish Architecture Foundation), Martin Rafter (Kilkenny LEADER Partnership) and Kaethe Burt O’Dea (BíUrban).

The workshops are focused around the themes of Inclusive Neighbourhoods, Town Centre Reuse & Revitalisation, Community Co-Design, Creating spaces for hospitality and activism. The afternoon will also include opportunities to join local community activists and champions exploring the wider neighbourhood of Dublin 8.

More contributor announcements to follow! This seminar is situated within the broader Making Neighbourhoods project led by Workhouse Union in partnership with Cloughjordan CoHousing and Self Organised Architecture (SOA). In addition to the seminar event, spatial practitioners will take part in a residency at Cloughjordan, from 22-30 June and the Making Neighbourhoods project will culminate in publication (Autumn 2023).
