Long Day's Journey

Pan Pan in association with Big Dance Theater

13 – 21 November 2026

“More than any other theater troupe I can think of, Pan Pan finds the soul-muddling angst in the Internet age.” – New York Times

It wasn’t the fog I minded, I really love fog.

A new performance inspired by Eugene O’Neill’s magnum opus, Long Day’s Journey is a hallucination of a family prone to bouts of addiction, depression and despair. Moving chronologically from dawn until dusk, with the impact of dependency deepening as the hours pass. Building on the original characters of Edmund, James, Jamie and Mary but set 100,000 years later, the emotional terrain remains a dense mosaic of sorrow, culpability, resentment, reproach, devotion, and longing.

Long Day’s Journey explores the closeness of passion and death, human and divine, the sexual and sacred, culminating in startling original imagery, sounds, colours, text and movement.

None of us can help the things life has done to us. At last everything comes between you and what you’d like to be, and you’ve lost your true self forever.

Group Group More about Pan Pan

Pan Pan have toured extensively to prestigious venues and festivals around the world including BAM, Lincoln Centre, St Ann’s Warehouse, NCPA China, Edinburgh International Festival Sydney and Melbourne Festivals, the Barbican and Hau Berlin. Since its inception, Pan Pan has constantly examined and challenged the nature of its work and has resisted settling into well-tried formulas. Developing new performance ideas is at the centre of the company’s mission.

Group Group More about Big Dance Theater

Founded by Molly Hickok, Paul Lazar, and Annie-B Parson in 1991, Big Dance Theater is known for its inspired synthesis of dance, music, text, and visual design. The company’s work ranges from pure dance pieces, to dance/theater works with sources from found text, literature, plays, or an alchemy of wildly incongruent source material, weaving and braiding disparate strands of text and theatrical elements into multidimensional performance. Big Dance has delved into the literary work of such authors as Twain, Tanizaki, Euripides, Flaubert, and Anne Carson, and dance is used as both frame and metaphor to theatricalize these writings. For 33 years, Big Dance Theater has worked to create over 25 large-scale dance/theater works, generating each piece over months and years of collaboration with its associate artists, a long-standing, ever-evolving family of actors, dancers, composers, and designers.
