(KNOWING NOT TO KNOW) READING SESSION 1

(Knowing not to know) - Art & Philosophy Sessions will be aimed at a cross-section of interests and experience, aiming to build on and become shaped by the interests and direction taken by the participants. Different guests will be leading each of the four sessions throughout 2009.

Reading groups will be established between each session, which will look at excerpts from key foundational texts, while doing so in an atmosphere of the non-expert. These readings will create a shared body of knowledge and a platform for the sessions.

Participants are welcome from all fields and backgrounds.

Session 1 - IMAGE

Q.(How) Do we image what we do not know?

(Looking at Rancière)

Most conversations around the work of Rancière and the mutual interest between the art-discursive community and the philosopher have been around the relationship between politics and aesthetics from the point of view of the political. What this session will deal with is the question of what ‘aesthetic-perceptive’ issues might be thrown up by the notion in Rancière’s work on ‘ignorance’, ‘disinterested knowing’, and the distribution of the sensible.

We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns -- the ones we don't know we don't know." Donald Rumsfeld
