HUNT FOR HIGGS

That’s About The Size Of It is a part-lecture, part-biography, a 50-minute interactive performance about the science all around us. Somewhere between CERN, String Theory and the effect of choice, chance and coincidence on our lives, we all just want to be happy.

THE HUMAN ENDEAVOUR IN THE HUNT FOR HIGGS
Post-Show discussion following the performance of That's About the Size of It, chaired by Naoise Nunn with special guest Dr. Steve Myers, Director of Engineering & Accelerators, CERN. 35004811
That’s About The Size Of It is a part-lecture, part-biography, a 50-minute interactive  performance about the science all around us. Somewhere between CERN, String Theory and the effect of choice, chance and coincidence on our lives, we all just want to be happy.
Developed as part of Show in a Bag, an artist development initiative of Dublin Fringe Festival, Fishamble: The New Play Company and Irish Theatre Institute to resource theatre makers and actors.
Stephen Myers is Director, Accelerators and Technology, for CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, which is one of the world’s largest and most respected centres for scientific research. Its business is fundamental physics, finding out what the universe is made of and how it works.
Myers was born in Belfast, and educated at the Queen’s University of Belfast, where he received a First Class Honours Degree in Electrical and Electronic engineering. He then completed his doctorate at Queen’s.
He started at CERN in 1972 as Engineer-in-Charge on the operation of the Intersecting Storage Rings Collider (ISR), where he worked for seven years. Since 1979, he has spent much of his career working on the Large Electron Positron (LEP). He spent 10 years participating in the design of LEP, then proceeded to take responsibility for the commissioning. He was in charge of preparing the LEP Collider for physics in the 1990s. He was Project Leader of the LEP upgrade (LEP2) from 1996 until 2000. In 2000, he became Leader of the SPS-LHC (SL) Division before becoming Head of the Accelerator and Beams (AB) Department in 2003.
In September 2008, he was nominated by the CERN Council as Director of Accelerators and Technology and, effective January 2009, became responsible for the operation and exploitation of the whole CERN accelerator complex, with particular emphasis on the LHC, and for the development of new projects and technologies.
He has been honored with many awards, including honorary doctorates from the University of Geneva and Queen’s University Belfast, the IOP Duddell Medal in 2003, and was a recipient of the 2010 ACFA/IPAC ’10 Achievement Prize for outstanding work in the accelerator field. He has been elected a Fellow of both the IOP and the European Physical Society.
