Handed Over is premiering in Dublin, produced by Project Arts Centre and has been supported by the Goethe Institute and the Embassy of Croatia in Dublin.
Fiction exists in the space between two different places of perception. When a shadow of reality is created from two opposing positions - what character emerges from the unknown quarters, the blindspots, peaks and flares?
Rosa Barba and David Maljkovic have staged the creation of a fiction, by sending back and forth between their transitory locations in Stockholm and Zagreb respectively, a series of images and texts, moving and stationary, which occur independently of the other. They pick up from and respond to what has come before, what could be anticipated for the future, or what occurs in the moment of reception.
This 'script-writing' is as much about the process towards building a narrative or fiction, as it is about the formation of a plot. Without a beginning or end, the fiction is suspended between two authors, two protagonists, who form a fragile relationship which is freeze-framed through the series of images. Some of those images are their own, some are derived from their autonomous research, some are created together and some are simply taken - or more precisely, handed-over.
Project's gallery is the host to the 16mm results of this process, with sound by Jan St Werner, installed in a built environment conceived by Barba and Maljkovic.
For an exhibition in Berlin in 2006, Barba collaborated against Croatian artist David Maljkovic, where their works both relied on and fought against each other. Working within the context of a theatre environment at Project, Rosa Barba has invited David Maljkovic to collaborate with her in a dual project investigating and rebutting their completely different approaches to narrative and story-telling.
