DRAFF | Cube Takeover

DRAFF, the living archive of experimental performance-making, brings three workshops by three boundary-breaking international artists to DDF. Creating work that pushes the limits of what dance can be, these artists mine the full potential of the body. They view the body as a critical site of knowing, as an archive, as multiply intelligent.

Suitable for arts professionals. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing.
DRAFF, the living archive of experimental performance making, will take over Project Arts Centre’s Cube for the second week of the Dublin Dance Festival, presenting three workshops by three boundary-breaking international artists.
Acknowledging the rapid expansion of the field of ‘dance’, DRAFF has invited three artists who work at the edges of the form to Dublin to share their practice with the local community. These artists (from Barcelona, Brussels and New York) create work that may not be easily classified as ‘dance’, but which situates the body as central. Creating work that pushes the boundaries of what dance can be, these artists mine the full potential of the body. They view the body as a critical site of knowing, as an archive, as multiply intelligent.
Tues 14 May, 2pm – 5pm: nora chipaumire / NHAKA
Born in Mutare, Zimbabwe and based in NYC, nora chipaumire has been challenging and embracing stereotypes of Africa and the black performing body, art and aesthetics since she started making dances in 1998. chipaumire’s workshop will lead participants in an exploration of NHAKA - inheritance | legacy - in her Shona language. The work and philosophy owe its genealogy to Shona culture and Shona spiritual practices. Animist technologies, strategies and philosophy are useful to those who are willing to reinvigorate their own art-making practice with honesty and rigour.

Wed 15 May, 2pm – 5pm: Aimar Pérez Galí / Embodied Discourse
Catalan choreographer Aimar Pérez Galí will lead a workshop that takes as its starting point his Trilogy of Embodied Discourse: Sweating the discourse: an embodied critique, The Touching Community and èpica. Galí develops his artistic practice as a dancer, choreographer, researcher, pedagogue and writer, always departing from the body as a reference place and understanding dance as a tool for critical transformation.

Thurs 16 May, 2pm – 5pm: Sarah Vanhee / polyphonic spaces
Brussels-based Sarah Vanhee is an artist, performer and author. Her interdisciplinary work travels in between civic space and the art institutional field. She has worked in prisons, private living rooms, theatres, on public canvases and in corporate meeting rooms. In this workshop, Vanhee will speak about her interest in what usually stays hidden, and the importance of lifting unheard voices, as well as about the position of the artist as a friendly intruder into society.
More info on Sarah Vanhee here.
On 16 May from 8:30pm, a night of music from some of Ireland’s most adventurous sound designers for theatre and dance, in collaboration with Dublin Digital Radio (ddr.), will round things off. Find out more here.
