CURATORIAL SESSION

Download the Curatorial Session Reader here.

IADT’s MA in Visual Arts Practices (MAVIS) and Project Arts Centre are delighted to present a public Curatorial Session, in which four internationally acclaimed curators have been invited to Dublin to respond to questions that 2008/2009 MAVIS students have posed into the field of curatorial practice.

Curatorial

The questions posed by the MAVIS students are both personally motivated and critically reflective upon international practice. Bart De Baere, Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, Raimundas Malašauskas and Tone Olaf Nielsen have been invited to respond specifically or generally to the diverse range of issues arising, with the aim of building a robust debate and an enlightening, publicly activated session.

Bart De Baere (BE) is Director of MuHKA, the Antwerp Museum of Contemporary Art, and was formerly Curator at Ghent Museum of Contemporary Art (now SMAK) and of Documenta IX. Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev (IT) is Chief Curator at the Castello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art in Italy, and was formerly Artistic Director for the 16th Sydney Biennale (2008), Revolutions – Forms that Turn and was recently appointed as Artistic Director of Documenta XIII. Raimundas Malašauskas (LT) has been a freelance Curator since leaving the CAC in Vilnius, where he produced many projects including CAC TV. He is currently an adjunct Curator of Artists Space, New York, and lectures on the Graduate Program in Curatorial Practice, CCA San Francisco. Tone Olaf Nielsen (DK) is an independent Curator, educator, and co-founding member of the artist-curator collective Goll & Nielsen and the curatorial collective

Kuratorisk Aktion. Curatorial Session will be moderated by Tessa Giblin, Curatorial Seminar Module leader for MAVIS, IADT and Curator of Visual Arts, Project Arts Centre.

A question is the staging-point for various forms of inquiry: a question can be a proposition, a provocation, a request, and an introduction to a conversation. The MAVIS students have staged this inquiry in a publication – Curatorial Session:  Reader, to provoke discussion and to gain further insight into the variety of approaches that we witness in almost every exhibition of contemporary and modern art.

Please contact Amanda Ralph, MAVIS Programme Co-ordinator amanda.ralph@iadt.ie for information on the MA in Visual Arts Practices programme or visit www.mavis.ie.

MAVIS and Project Arts Centre are grateful to Culture Ireland for their support in making the participation of our international guests possible.
