Biographies

Nach discovered Krump by chance at the age of 22, coming across performances in front of the Opéra de Lyon. She quickly became immersed in this urban dance whose strength she had only previously glimpsed in Rize, the famous David Lachapelle documentary. The street became her first school where she found a community willing to share their knowledge with her. She was immediately fascinated by the power and breadth of emotion – from elation to rage – expressed by this dance style which she calls “the gospel of the suburbs”. Incorporating influences from diverse artforms from Kathakali and flamenco to poetry, visual art and film, Nach developed a distinctive choreographic language. She has collaborated with artists including Marcel Bazonnet and Angela Bello, and was a resident artist at the Kujoyama Villa (2018) and artistic fellow at the CCN de la Rochelle (2018 – 2020). She is currently Associate Artist at the renowned Maison de la Danse in Lyon and is part of the NAVIGATE Residency Exchange, a DDF initiative in partnership with La Biennale de Lyon – Danse / Maison de la Danse (Lyon).

There will be a post-show talk with Nach after the performance on Thurs16 May, hosted by Jessie Thompson.

In her first solo Cellule, Nach brings to the stage a personal and liberated expression of Krump, a dance style born in the early 2000s following social tensions and the pivotal racial riots in Los Angeles.

Rooted in its historic anger, raw emotion and hard-hitting physicality, Krump is re-envisioned in this work through Nach’s own choreographic grace, honesty and vulnerability to create a striking self-portrait. Immersed in projections of photographic imagery of black activists, she begins an astonishing metamorphosis, giving form and life to the figures that inhabit her – woman, man, shadow, animal.

In this work of rare intensity, Nach invites us to explore the light and shadows that flow and weave through us all. She dances violence, excess, desire and power, bursting through the barriers that confine us.

A work of fierce skill and explosive energy, Cellule merges diverse influences to create a unique choreographic lexicon, yet the language of Krump remains loud and clear.
