Catalytic Intersections (Developing a framework for exploring artists moving images)

New name but same aim!

To celebrate this development, Irish Artists’ Film Index is hosting its first symposium at Project Arts Centre, Catalytic Intersections.

With four presentations providing broad overviews of aspects of Irish artists’ moving images (IAMIs), the aim is to generate debate about the genre and its place in current visual arts in Ireland. Relating their discussions to information held in the Irish Artists Film Index, the presenters will seek to explore and contextualize moving images work and their influences.

This symposium will be of interest not just to those involved in experimental film and artists’ moving image but also to anyone curious about the visual arts and the issues, opinions and investigations they provoke. The audience will be invited to contribute during the Q&A session after each presentation.

BIOGRAPHIES

Fiona Marron
Fiona Marron is a visual artist based in Dublin, Ireland. She holds an MA in Visual Arts Practice from IADT Dun Laoghaire, Ireland (2013) and a BA in Fine Art from Dublin Institute of Technology, Ireland (2009). Along with several solo exhibitions and screenings across Ireland and the UK over the past decade her work has been presented internationally at venues including CAPC Musée d’art contemporain de Bordeaux, France, FlatTime House, London, UK, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo of Torino, Italy and Sinopale: Third Sinop Biennial, Turkey. Reviews of her work have featured in several international art journals including Art Monthly, Paper Visual Art and MAP.

Áine Philips
Áine Phillips is a visual artist based in Galway. She works in live performance, video and installation. She has exhibited in Ireland and internationally since the late 80’s and has created work for multiple contexts; public art commissions, the street, club events, galleries and museums including City of Women Festival Ljubljana, Kyoto Art Centre Japan, Project Dublin and MOCA Cleveland. She has given talks on her work at TATE Britain and IMMA. She has been involved in curating major live art and performance events in Ireland and the UK. She also writes and published the survey “Performance Art in Ireland: A History” with Intellect Books/Live Art Development Agency UK in 2015. Her work is collected by the National Museum of Ireland.

Michaële Cutaya
Michaële Cutaya is a writer, researcher and editor on art living in County Galway. Her reviews and essays have been published in Irish Arts Review, The Stinging Fly and Art Monthly amongst others. She has been editor of Circa Art Magazine since 2016.

Meadhbh McNutt
Meadhbh McNutt is an Irish artist and writer. Meadhbh’s practice looks at questions of documentation, particularly where intimacy meets information. She has exhibited work internationally in Ireland, the UK, Hungary, Poland and Hong Kong. Her words and photographs can be found in publications including Tank Magazine, Circa Art Magazine, HeadStuff and the Visual Artists’ News Sheet. She has also written and edited for a range of clients including GARAGE Magazine (Vice Media), Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture and The Douglas Hyde Gallery.

As an arts facilitator, Meadhbh served for a year on the board of directors at 126 Gallery, co-organising the Circuit Arts Festival as part of Galway 2020’s Small Towns Big Ideas programme. She has delivered talks at such institutions as TU Dublin School of Creative Arts, GMIT Centre for Creative Arts and Media, Galway Technical Institute and The Model, Sligo. She recently facilitated a series of sold-out art writing workshops at CCA Derry~Londonderry, and was recipient of the VAI/DCC Art Writing Award 2020.

Fifi Smith
Fifi Smith is an Irish visual artist who has maintained an active and progressive art practice for 29 years. She is  founder and current director of Irish Artists’ Film Index (formerly the MexIndex)

She regularly serves on selection panels for Percent-for-Arts Projects since 2010, she was a founder member of the Plastik Festival 2015. She also facilitated the Sculpture in Context Exhibitions from 1995 through to 1999,  was Director of Coda 999 Exhibition at Dublin Castle in 1999, and was Director of the Camac Open Sculpture Exhibition 1995-6.

Her own work has evolved from ceramics, through bronze and steel, to  mixed media installations.   Originally working as an architect, her first solo show was in 1998.   Her current work is in the form of kinetic light installations and experimental movies, which she has lectured on in the Media Studies Department of NUI Maynooth. Her work has been shown in Barcelona, Bucharest, Bejiing, as well as Washington DC, London and Manchester.
