VAI, in partnership with Project Arts Centre, welcome Kader Attia to Ireland to present on his recent work. The event will include a screening of Réfléchir la Mémoire / Reflecting Memory (2016), which will be followed by a Q&A. The event will be introduced and moderated by Lívia Páldi, Curator of Project Arts Centre.

Kader Attia’s video Réfléchir la Mémoire / Reflecting Memory (2016) explores phantom limb syndrome, a medical condition in which amputees experience sensations relating to a missing body part, and considers it as a metaphor for unresolved, collective trauma. Mixing documentary and poetical imagery, Attia’s video features interviews with a wide range of people – from surgeons and amputees, to therapists and dub musicians. Over the course of these interviews, Attia explores the way in which the medical phenomenon relates to the social as well as the individual body.

Kader Attia’s work has been shown in group shows and biennials such as the 12th Shanghai Biennial; the 12th Gwangju Biennial; the 12th Manifesta, Palermo; the 57th Venice Biennial; dOCUMENTA(13) in Kassel; Met Breuer, New York; Kunsthalle Wien; MoMA, New York; Tate Modern, London; Centre Pompidou, Paris; or The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York — just to name a few.
