Project is delighted to host this artist talk by Harold Offeh, related to his billboard, 'Lounging (Westminster)', 2023; a work commissioned as part of our current exhibition, Being Horizontal.
This work is an iteration of an ongoing series called 'Lounging', which focuses on depictions of black men on album covers in a repose or lounging. The pose was a popular trope for black male singers in the 1980s. In the photographic series, Offeh tries to unpack the work by re-positioning the series in various rural locations. The work attempts to explore representations of the black male body.
The talk will contextualise the Lounging series, looking at its various iterations and reconnecting the images to the original album artworks referenced, i.e. 1980s soul album covers.
