Chun Comóradh Caoga Bliain ar an gcéad léiriú de An Triail (22ú Meán Fómhair 1964) agus On Trial (19ú Márta 1965) a cheiliúradh, déanfaidh Irish Theatre Institute (Institiúid Téatar na hÉireann) comóradh ar ról Mháiréad Ní Ghráda in amharclannaíocht na hÉireann le plé, ar an ndráma agus ar an ndrámadóir a bhreathnóidh ar an gcomhthéacs staire agus amharclainne as a dtáinig.
To mark the 50th anniversary of the premier production of An Triail (22nd September 1964) and its English language version On Trial (19th March 1965), Irish Theatre Institute celebrates the contribution of Máiréad Ní Ghráda to Irish theatre with a bilingual rehearsed reading followed by a panel discussion examining the play and playwright in its theatrical and historical contexts.
The best known of Máiréad Ní Ghráda’s plays, An Triail represents a pivotal moment in Irish playwriting, instigating a revival in Irish language learning and paving the way for strong female roles in Irish playwriting.
The play’s controversial subject matter steeped in societal and religious oppression still resonates half a century after its first production.
This rehearsed bilingual reading, (Act 1 in English; Act 2 as Gaeilge) will be directed by multi-award winning film and television director Dearbhla Walsh.
The cast includes Karen Ardiff, Denis Conway, Tim Creed, Marcus Lambe, Ionia Ni Chróinín, Clíona Ní Chíosáin, Tomás Ó Súilleabháin, Joan Sheehy and Jonathan White.
The post show discussion will be chaired by Prof. Margaret Kelleher, Chair of Anglo-Irish Literature and Drama, UCD.
