DDF is proud to present two works by legendary choreographer Yvonne Rainer.
RoS Indexical invokes the passion and furore that accompanied the notorious premiere of Stravinskys The Rite of Spring in 1913. Audiences were outraged by Stravinskys dissonant score, by the drab tunics worn by the dancers and their percussive, earth-bound movements. Dancing as a quartet of individuals, four remarkable performers take on Rainers mission of achieving a re-vision of this disruptively glorious work.
Spiraling Down, Rainers newest dance, draws its inspiration from a variety of sourcesnewspaper photos, soccer moves, old movies, ballet, Steve Martin, Sarah Bernhardt, and even Rainers own disinterred dances from the 1960sto create an eerie resonance that is both melancholic and unpredictable.
Yvonne Rainers influence on the international world of dance and film, since her groundbreaking presence in the Judson Dance Theater of the 1960s, is unparalleled. Rainer is currently a Distinguished Professor of Studio Art at the University of California, Irvine.
“Spiraling Down, though it still samples heavily from the past, is terrifically unself- conscious, full of high silliness and sophisticated spatial patterns that allow for smart, tender ruminations on the brain – body connection.” Claudia La Rocco, The New York Times
