LotusEater is a one-night performance event in the Cube, presenting a collaboration between artist Aoibheann Greenan and Dublin based band, LotusEater. This event will transform the Cube into an experiential environment in which the five piece trip/rock band will become part of Greenan’s sculptures, using them as their props and costumes during the gig, becoming hybrids of myth and culture. Greenan’s incorporation of live music into her sculptural practice taps into music’s frequent place at the forefront of mass cultural shifts.
In the Greek legend, Odysseus, while on his ten year journey returning home from the Trojan War, encountered a North African people living in a perpetual state of blissful forgetfulness, drugged by the fruit of a mythical lotus. Inspired by Greenan’s recent travels to India and Iceland this performative event will be infused with a similar sense of entering an exotic set or an altered state of consciousness.
Aoibheann Greenan
Since graduating from NCAD in 2010, Greenan has worked prolifically undertaking residencies at SIM, Reykjavik; SOMA, Mexico City and Château de Servieres, Marseilles as well as travelling in India. In Greenan’s practice there is harmony between symbol, legend and visual impact, creating a visual language that is both familiar and estranged. Her sculptural constructions explore a biographical history that is self-reflexive while critiquing the broader history of cultural accumulation that is prevalent in today’s society.
