The exhibition David at the Project Arts Centre was the Italian artist, Enrico David’s first solo exhibition in Ireland. Through his work David constructs a complex personal culture from contemporary and historical sources. Using images, objects and texts he explores the politics and aesthetics of gender in a manner that departs from the identity politics of the past two decades. David is known for his large-scale embroidered canvases depicting extraordinary figures constructed in thread out of complex linear patterns. Recently however, his work has diversified into a range of media including fabric sculpture, furniture, animation and works on paper.

At Project, David customised the gallery turning it into his own HQ. The space was conceived as an office or gentlemen’s club with decorative wooden panelling, walls lined with medals and a large boardroom table covered with sheets of headed paper, drawings and the artist’s manifesto. The installation appears as the fantastical product of the artist’s imagination, describing a baroque corporate culture realised through the deployment of a highly aestheticised constellation of artefacts. The exhibition created an ‘exclusively masculine environment‘ concerned with the dynamics of power and was loaded with repressed sexuality. Using both explicit and covert methods, David articulates the erotic and the taboo which underpin the artist’s take on masculine identity.
