Dancer from the Dance Festival : Platform

Show Time: 5:30pm (60 mins)

John Scott’s Irish Modern Dance Theatre [IMDT] reboots the company’s annual Dancer From The Dance: Festival of Irish Choreography back to a live setting, gathering the best International and Irish choreographers, teachers, performers, filmmakers in dance, to celebrate all that identifies ‘Irishness’ through the medium of dance.

Dancer from the Dance Festival presents Platform, an evening of works in progress from emerging choreographers. Choreographers include Niamh McPhillips, Favour Odusola, Aphra Hartmann, Matt Szczerek and Alessandra Azevedo.

Featuring:

Niamh McPhillips in Philidelphia here I come
I want to be an artist/performer, I no longer want to be defined as an actor, dancer, singer, etc. I want to work with people from all different mediums and backgrounds. I want to be a sponge and soak everything and everyone up to hopefully allow someone to be in a space where everything and anything they want to see or experience could happen.

Favour Odusola in I PROMISE
This piece is a tribute. It is simply put a conversation between my father and I, using elements of the essence he passed on to me, this work will be a celebration and a closing chapter to forever learning and never forgetting who I am and where I came from.

Aphra Hartmann in Within and Without
This work explores the relationship between the natural and the artificial. Through improvisation and exploration, Within and Without works as a conversation between musician and dancer exploring these ideas and aiming to give an answer through the marriage of the two media.

Matt Szczerek in END
A new dance/circus performance piece depicting a post-apocalyptic world, where a group of artists despite glum predictions of their future fight for the right to entertain. When time is up, when there is no one left to laugh, comment, love, criticise, will we still feel the same need to create?

Alessandra Azevedo in Void
A work in progress solo piece that represents the necessity of opening spaces to bring up new narratives into the world, confronting the unspoken expectations of the new space

“Launched in 2019, Scott’s personal crusade to promote Irish choreographers on the global stage began as a labour of love to challenge limiting, confused, and often negative notions about Irish choreography and identity… the festival’s growth over the past three years has been staggering… Scott’s determination has this year’s festival shining a light on some of our finest choreographers, and dance film makers, positioned as part of a global practice and historic tradition, commanding form and space with the very best. [The Festival suggests] “that Irish choreography, like being Irish, like dance itself, and dance on film, is everything you thought it was and everything you thought it wasn’t. And lots in between you never thought possible or never thought of at all. Shaping identity, and dance, well into the future.” Chris O’Rourke, The Arts Review, July 2021
